The incidence of "adult-onset" diabetes (type 2) in kids at Texas Children's Hospital has increased from less than 1% just 20 years ago to 27% today. Executive Summary: Because it was once thought that only adults developed type 2 diabetes, it is often called "adult onset" diabetes. This type of diabetes is directly linked to being overweight. Doctors are seeing a dramatic increase in type 2 diabetes in children and adolescents. Today 27% of children and teens at Texas children's hospital were diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, compared to less than 1% just 20 years ago. Source: Obesity Week, Feb 3, 2002: v2, #5, |
