Metro Briefing: Connecticut
HARTFORD: JUNK-FOOD LIMITS URGED State lawmakers are considering a ban
on junk food from school vending machines. Food sold from the machines
would be limited to snacks and drinks that meet federal nutrition standards.
Representative Mary M. Mushinsky, a Democrat and the chairwoman of the
Select Committee on Children, said the bill was part of an effort to reduce
childhood obesity. Senator Catherine W. Cook, the committee's ranking
Senate Republican, said she was not convinced that the state should regulate
children's diets. "I concur there are a lot of things we as the Legislature
can do to help parents raise kids," she said, "but we are not
parents." (AP)
